Mazda is On Top When It Comes to Safety

It may come as a surprise that Mazda, the car manufacturer long known for its “Zoom Zoom” slogan, now tops the list for the most Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) award for its 2020 model year lineup, with 5 models qualifying. This award is the top IIHS safety billing for a vehicle and it stands above the lesser Top Safety Pick award.

2020 Mazda3 Hatchback

Mazda models that earned this award include the:

  • Mazda 3 sedan
  • Mazda 3 hatchback
  • Mazda CX-3
  • Mazda CX-5 crossovers
  • Mazda 6 sedan

Notably, the 2020 Mazda 3-row CX-9 crossover received the Top Safety Pick designation.

What does a TSP+ award mean for Mazda vehicles? The Top Safety Pick+ award means that Mazda’s qualifying vehicles earned “Good” ratings in the following IIHS tests:

  • Small and moderate overlap front crash
  • Side-impact
  • Roof strength
  • Head restraint evaluations

These Mazda vehicles also received “Advanced” or “Superior” designations for accident detection and avoidance systems. And they received “Acceptable” or “Good” for headlight performance, which can help you avoid collisions and relying on a vehicle’s automated emergency braking system altogether, giving this category a well-earned place in a car’s safety ratings. This rating also comes as no surprise since all 5 TSP+ 2020 Mazda models come with standard LED headlights. In addition, these cars come with Mazda’s i-Activsense active-safety-technology suite that includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-keep assist
  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Lane departure warning

Mazda added the automated braking system and improved headlights to the 2020 CX-3, helping to push it from its 2019 TSP earning to a TSP+ for this year. Similarly, the Mazda 3 rose in the ranks this year to plus status. However, no news yet regarding Mazda’s safety award expectations for their new model for 2020: the CX-30 crossover.

It’s also important to remember that IIHS doesn’t test all cars, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs its own set of safety tests with separate ratings.
